South Portland, ME USA

I was walking my American Bully rescue dog, Chunky, early this morning at Bug Light Park in South Portland, Maine. Most recently because of the mass shootings in Lewiston, it’s been a devastating stretch of time for the Maine community; I grew up in Lewiston. And, my family has lost three family members this year due to devastating illnesses.

Bug Light is a beautiful, serene space that borders the ocean. There is a wooded area with trodden paths where many people walk with their dogs. I was on one of those paths. Chunky pulled me, and stopped to sniff something in an area I generally don’t walk with him. As he was sniffing, I looked up and a heart was gently swaying from a small branch on a nearby tree. I noticed Chunky was sitting under the tree and looking up toward the direction of the heart. It was lovely! It was a Halloween themed heart that was beautifully made and embellished with two tiny black buttons, and an orange button. One tiny black button was sewn on a blackbird on the fabric, and the other tiny black button had been sewn on the main fabric. And the orange button had been sewn on a pumpkin on the fabric. With great attention to detail, it was meticulously sewn by an incredibly kind and loving person. As a lover of hand-crafted, sewn objects, it was such a sweet thing to find. How lovely that someone took the time to quietly brighten and lift my day. And, I happen to love Halloween!

For a moment, I wondered whether to leave it there on the branch for others to see too. But, the note on the heart said, “I need a home!” I felt like the heart was meant for me. A huge, heartfelt thank you to the generous and thoughtful person who placed ‘My Halloween Heart” on that branch at Bug Light Park. Hugs to you!
